Doors And Storefronts of Medina, Ohio

February 19th, 2024

Doors And Storefronts of Medina, Ohio

Medina, Ohio is a historic town with a charming square and many unique buildings. All around Medina Public Square, you will encounter some of the most interesting and quaint specialty shops and boutiques in the country. I wanted to capture the beauty and diversity of uptown Medina by creating a composite photograph using individual pictures of its doors and storefronts. I devoted a fall afternoon to walking around Medina Square, photographing more than 24 storefronts and doors.

In 1967, a group of Medina citizens concerned about the loss of character of the uptown area began a grassroots effort to return Public Square to its historic appearance. Today, the restored Public Square is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Looking up at the architecture of the buildings, you will see a Medina Public Square rich with stories about bygone times, creating a sense of nostalgia for visitors and residents alike.

Arriving home that late October afternoon, I downloaded the pictures to the computer. I was pleased to have captured so many great pictures, but I knew it would take a lot of work to edit each one. I was also far behind in my editing work from other photo shoots, so this project had to wait its turn. Finally, four months later, I completed the project I set out to do. The result is a stunning composite photographic series of doors and storefronts of Medina, Ohio, that reflects the historic and artistic charm of the town. The collection includes a vertical panoramic of 24 doors, a standard-sized vertical print of 16 doors, three horizontal prints of 8 doors each and 4 square prints of 6 doors each.

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway

February 7th, 2024

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway

The Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad (CVSR) is one of the oldest and longest scenic tourist excursion railways in the country. The train runs through the Cuyahoga Valley National Park from Independence to Akron.
The Cuyahoga Valley Railway began operations in 1880, transporting iron, coal and passengers from the Tuscarawas River Valley to Cleveland, Akron, and Canton. In 1989, a mutually beneficial partnership began for the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
Locomotive #6777 and #6771 approaches the train station at Indigo Lake. The train was built in Canada in 1959 by Montreal Locomotive Works. The CVSR purchased #6777 in 1994 and #6771 in April, 1993. The locomotives have a 12 cylinder 251, 1,800 horsepower diesel engine.

Part of the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway's fleet is a California Zephyr trainset consisting of 5 stainless steel passenger rail cars that were built in 1948 by the Budd Company in Philadelphia, PA.

Silver Solarium was built in 1948 by the Budd Company for the Chicago, Quincy & Burlington Railroad as CB&Q #377. It was one of the six dome/sleeper/observation cars specifically built for the California Zephyr. the Silver Solarium has been fully renovated and has been operating as a private car, delighting passengers with stunning views from its Vista Dome and observation lounge. The observation lounge seats 11 in classic railroad lounge chairs, and the Vista Dome car seats 24 in booth seating at tables. CVSR acquired the car in September, 2018.

The California Zephyr, also known as the Silver Lady, was a pioneer in luxury passenger train travel. Dubbed “the most talked about train in America,” the California Zephyr made its inaugural eastbound run on March 20, 1949 with service between San Francisco and Chicago that covered 2,525 miles and took an average of 2.5 days to complete.
The California Zephyr offered sophisticated dining experiences with linens and china; sleeping compartments that ranged from the elegant staterooms complete with bathrooms, showers, drawing rooms, and bedrooms, to the cozier “roomettes”; and Vista Dome cars with windows on every side—including the ceiling—to provide breathtaking panoramic views of the passing mountains, rivers, and countryside.
The California Zephyr operated as a passenger train for 20 years, and its 77 cars were later sold to different companies and private owners. Over the years, the majority of these stainless steel cars have all but disappeared from America’s railways, having been sold off, scrapped, or simply left in storage and fallen into complete disrepair. CVSR’s acquisition of the trainset will enable us to preserve a vital piece of our nation’s railway history that was at serious and imminent risk of being forgotten.

The U. S. Air Force Thunderbirds Soar Over Cleveland

October 12th, 2023

The U. S. Air Force Thunderbirds Soar Over Cleveland

The Cleveland, Ohio Air Show in 2023 witnessed a breathtaking display of precision, power, and patriotism as the United States Air Force Thunderbirds took to the skies. Known for their dazzling aerial displays and precision flying, the Thunderbirds left the audience in awe with their breathtaking performance.

The Thunderbirds, officially known as the U.S. Air Force Air Demonstration Squadron, have a rich history dating back to 1953. Created to showcase the might and capabilities of the United States Air Force, they have since become an iconic symbol of American air power. They perform their aerial magic in sleek F-16 Fighting Falcon aircraft, renowned for their agility and speed. These highly maneuverable jets are painted in a striking red, white, and blue livery, symbolizing the pride and patriotism of the American military.

One of the Thunderbirds' signature maneuvers is the Diamond Formation, where four aircraft fly in close proximity, wingtip to wingtip, at speeds exceeding 400 miles per hour. The precision and coordination required for this formation is nothing short of astonishing.

Complementing their group formations are two solo pilots who execute jaw-dropping aerial acrobatics. These fearless aviators perform gravity-defying rolls, climbs, and dives, showcasing not only their skill but also the incredible capabilities of the F-16.

While the pilots are the stars of the show, the Thunderbirds are a true team effort. Behind the scenes, an army of dedicated support personnel, including mechanics, public affairs officers, and many others, ensures that every performance goes off without a hitch.
Stunning Aerial Maneuvers:

The Thunderbirds' performance at the Cleveland Air Show was a thrilling spectacle from start to finish. Some of the standout maneuvers included:

High-Speed Pass: The Thunderbirds kicked off their show with a thunderous high-speed pass, all six aircraft hurtling past the crowd at an exhilarating speed. The roar of their engines was enough to make anyone's heart race.

Opposing Pass: In a daring head-on maneuver, two Thunderbirds aircraft approached each other at breakneck speeds, only to narrowly miss each other before making a breathtaking escape in opposite directions, leaving the crowd gasping.

Looping the Loop: The solo pilots executed gravity-defying loops, defying the laws of physics as they soared into the sky and tumbled back down. These maneuvers showcased the exceptional aerodynamics of the F-16.

Diamond Formation Roll: The signature Diamond Formation was a visual masterpiece. Four aircraft flew in perfect harmony, with wingtips just feet apart, executing flawless rolls that seemed almost impossible given the proximity.

Delta Formation: The Thunderbirds' signature Delta Formation involved five aircraft flying as one, with the lead aircraft at the forefront and the other four forming a V-shape behind it. The tight synchronization was a testament to the team's extraordinary teamwork.

Thunderbird Roll: The grand finale saw all six Thunderbirds aircraft performing a synchronized roll, leaving behind colorful smoke trails that painted the sky. It was a jaw-dropping conclusion to an already spectacular show.

As the Thunderbirds bid farewell to Cleveland in 2023, anticipation is already building for their return in 2025. Their performances not only entertain but also serve as a reminder of the dedication, skill, and sacrifice of the men and women of the U.S. Air Force. They inspire the next generation of aviators and instill a sense of pride in all who witness their awe-inspiring displays. The Thunderbirds will continue to represent the epitome of American military aviation, thrilling audiences and instilling pride in the nation's airpower.

In conclusion, the United States Air Force Thunderbirds' performance at the 2023 Cleveland Air Show was a mesmerizing display of precision, power, and teamwork. Their extraordinary maneuvers left spectators in awe and reminded everyone of the incredible capabilities of the U.S. Air Force. As we eagerly await their return in 2025, one thing is certain: the Thunderbirds will continue to amaze and inspire, showcasing the true spirit of American aviation prowess.

Northeast Ohio's Grand Vista

September 28th, 2023

Northeast Ohio

Tinkers Creek Gorge Overlook is one of the most spectacular views in Northeast Ohio. The overlook is located off Gorge Parkway in the Cleveland Metroparks Bedford Reservation. Listed in 1967 as a Natural National Landmark, this area is also part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The Gorge Overlook is a view that is lucky to exist. In the 1960’s there were local lawmakers who wanted to dam up the Tinkers Creek Gorge, turning it into a deep 150-acre recreational lake. The proposed idea gained a lot of support, but luckily did not pass and the gorge remained untouched.

My predawn arrival at the overlook on a warm October morning revealed a breathtaking view as the sun peeked over the edge of the treetops. You can visit this attraction any time of year, but the view is especially spectacular in the autumn, when vibrant fall colors blanket the valley in a sea of orange, reds, browns and yellows.

Geo-Analytics for Artwork Sold

Geo-Analytics for Artwork Sold

Over the years, as a professional wedding and portrait photographer, I sold many prints and other photo products to clients. I always knew who was purchasing my work. Since signing up with Fine Art America in January of 2012 and making my first sale in June, the buyers have been anonymous. The only information I receive is the title and type of artwork purchased, and the location where the order came from. This has been a new experience with not knowing the client or whether they are a collector or a commercial buyer. Marketing to new customers is quite a challenge.

Since there are no demographics available for marketing my fine art work, I turned to Geo-Analytics with hopes this would give me some insight to finding new clients. The map you see below indicates the locations where artwork was purchased. I used Google Maps to chart each sale. Clicking on a pin or artwork titles in the left window opens a context menu providing the location and type of print as well as a direct link to the picture the was purchased from dalekincaid.com. Colored pins represent popular sales, such as the blue pins for the Cleveland Skyline favorite. The orange pins are the Walking With Grandma print. The green pins are a combination of all my Birds Of Prey artwork. And the red pins are everything else.

I have studied the Geo-Analytics map in an effort to determine what marketing efforts it might reveal. When I figure that out I will let you know. Meanwhile, I will keep on doing what I do, charts sales and see where it leads. Comments and ideas are always welcome.

Lakeside Daisies

June 23rd, 2021

Lakeside Daisies

I recently visited the Lakeside Daisy State Nature Preserve in Marblehead, Ohio. This was my first visit to view the rarest of Ohio native wildflower endangered species. Lakeside Daisies normally bloom early to mid-may. Due to an early spring, the daisies were past their prime. So I had to make the best of a bleak situation and the mid-day sun. This was one of the last pictures I captured laying very uncomfortably on the ground. Artwork was added to make this a delightful addition to my Texture Art Photography project.
