The Northern Cardinal was designated the state bird of Ohio by the General Assembly in 1933. It is also the state bird for six other states as well. Male cardinals are a brilliant scarlet red, females a buffy-brown with reddish wings - both have a jet-black mask, pronounced crest, and heavy bill.
